Understanding Fistula-in-ano:
An anal fistula ( #bhagandar / Fistula in ano ) is a small channel that develops between the end of the bowel and the skin around the anus. It frequently is the result of a previous or current anal abscess. The fistula has a tract with two openings – An internal opening into the rectum or anal canal and an external opening through the skin of the buttocks.
It is an abnormal hollow tract or cavity that is lined with granulation tissue and that connects a primary opening inside the anal canal to a secondary opening in the perianal skin; secondary tracts may be multiple and can extend from the same primary opening.
