Laser Surgery for Stones admin, March 16, 2023 LASER FOR KIDNEY STONES This is also called laser lithotripsy. The surgery is minimally invasive and does not require opening up the body. An endoscope called a ureterorenoscope is passed into the kidney. A laser fibre, which is just the size of a small guitar string, is passed through the endoscope. Laser energy transmitted through the fibre is used to break up the kidney stone. Procedure is done under anaesthesia. Patient does not feel pain or discomfort. Laser fibre transmits laser energy. Laser energy breaks stones into fragments. Flexible scope is passed through the ureteric access sheath into to the Kidney. So it does not come directly in contact with the kidney. Some pieces are removed with a small Dormia basket Smaller pieces can pass out on their own with the urine. Patients can go home same day. Kelina hospital has laser, ultrasonic and pneumatic lithotripsy machines and the Swiss Lithoclast Master. We also have multiple ureteroscopes, flexible uretero-renoscopes and nephroscopes which we use for kidney stone procedures.
