Plastic Surgeon Reacts to TLC’s Awake Surgery | Meegan Gruber | Dr. Zelken | Wide Awake Surgery

I had the pleasure of watching a few episodes of TLC’s “Awake Surgery” at the recommendation of one of my patients. I really like Dr. Gruber and her personality, sophistication, and innovative spirit. I also really like performing wide awake surgery. However, I present this video to educate the community at large that wide awake surgery: 1) has limitations, 2) is not for everyone, and 3) is not typically performed as you see it on the show. Dr. Gruber seems to be very safe and thoughtful, but at my center visitors are not allowed and patients are not directly exposed to the surgery they are undergoing. Super happy for my colleague, nonetheless, and encourage viewers considering wide awake surgery to give it a looksy.
